Behavior and DietVaquitas use high pitched sounds and echolocation. They feed and swim at a leisurely pace, and are very evasive. They rise to breathe with a slow, forward motion, then disappear, making it challenging to observe. They are alone unless with young, and are more competitive during the mating season. Vaquitas tend to forage for food near lagoons, and are non selective predators, eating small fish and squid. Teleosts are some of their most common prey.
